The effect of fluorescent whitening agent

2021-07-19

For the human body
(1) No irritation to the skin
After years of animal and human tests, it has been shown that the fluorescent whitening agent CBS Pure is not irritant to the skin and will not cause skin allergies.
Professor Shen Yongjia wrote the book "fluorescent whitening agent" pointed out: fluorescent whitening agent will not be absorbed by the skin.  Even if a small amount of fluorescent brightening agent CBS adheres to the skin in the process of use, it will not react with human skin, and it is easy to be completely washed off through daily washing activities (such as washing hands, bathing, etc.) without being absorbed through the skin [3].  Therefore, direct skin contact with the detergent with CBS added will not cause harm.
(2) No adverse effect on wound healing
The article "Toxicological Properties of Fluorescent Whitening Agent", published in German Journal of Dermatology in 1994, points out that even direct contact with the wound with textile materials containing fluorescent whitening agent does not have adverse effects on wound healing and does not cause pathological changes in human skin.
(3) metabolism: fluorescence whitening agent CBS is water-soluble, through normal metabolism can be quickly completely discharged from the body
Studies on the metabolism of mice showed that most of the fluorescent whitening agent CBS used in detergents were rapidly discharged through the intestinal tract and could not be absorbed by the intestinal tract after a large dose of feeding.  The blood, liver, kidney, brain, muscle and fat have no fluorescent whitening agent residue, that is, will not cause accumulation in the body.  So even if a small amount of fluorescent brightening agent CBS enters the body in daily life, it will be quickly excreted through the normal metabolic process.
(4) fluorescent whitening agent CBS has no teratogenicity, no carcinogenicity
Through the acute toxicity study on a variety of animals and as long as two years of chronic toxicological experiments in mice, CBS is a non-toxic substance, no teratogenicity, no carcinogenesis, no mutagenicity.
Toxicity of fluorescent brightener CBS (also known as FWA-5) in the test report of the European Union Detergent Association (A.I.S.E.) entitled "Risk Assessment of Impact of Household Detergent Composition on Human Body and the Environment: Fluorescent Brightener FWA-5" indicated that fluorescent brightener CBS (also known as FWA-5) was carcinogenic without light.
The German Ministry of Environment solemnly declared in 1983 that the fluorescent whitening agent CBS does not have any sensitization and teratogenicity.
For the environment
(1) High degradability of CBS
CBS in detergent usage is not high, after rinsing dilution, sewage after a general treatment, CBS can reduce more than 95%, the amount of the final entry into the environment is very small.  Even if a small part enters surface water (such as rivers), it will undergo photodegradation very quickly, and the photodegradation products are easy to undergo secondary degradation, that is, they will be eaten by microorganisms and decomposed into carbon dioxide and other substances that have no impact on the environment.
(2) It has no effect on the biological chain
CBS is a water-soluble fluorescent whitening agent, which does not stay in biological tissues and organs after being ingested by fish.  Laboratory studies have shown that CBS does not accumulate in fish even after living with high concentrations of CBS for a period of time and leaving the environment for two days.

Based on long-term ecological studies, CBS is not harmful to the environment.
